Sakhir, Bahrain
The Bahrain International Circuit is one of the toughest tests for tyres on the entire Formula 1 calendar. Carved into the desert outside Sakhir, the circuit sits on an abrasive asphalt surface that generates extraordinary amounts of tyre wear, particularly on the rear axle. Opened in 2004, it was the first Formula 1 circuit in the Middle East and has hosted the season opener for much of the modern era, making it the first place in the calendar where teams learn whether their winter work has paid off.
The layout is characterised by a mix of slow and medium-speed corners connected by long straights, particularly the pit straight and the back section between turns 4 and 8. The track's elevation changes are subtle but meaningful, with the uphill section through turns 13–14 loading the tyres differently than the downhill exit of turn 9. The wide, sweeping turn 8 is the circuit's most photographed corner — a long left-hander at medium speed where the car is loaded laterally for almost two seconds, and where any understeer is immediately punished by the gravel trap outside.
The abrasive surface usually forces most teams into a two-stop race, though the aggressive tyre degradation can occasionally create conditions where a one-stop on the hard compound becomes viable if a car can manage wear through the first stint. The undercut is potent here: the long pit straight means the out-lap speed on fresh rubber comes into play quickly, and teams running the undercut between turns 4 and 8 — the fastest section — create meaningful gaps. On the speed trace, the circuit's character is immediately visible: short, sharp braking events into slow corners (turns 1, 4, 10, 11) separated by long flat-out sections. Overlay two drivers at turn 10 — the tight right before the final sector — and you'll often see completely different minimum speeds: this corner rewards commitment and a stable rear end, and it's where the fastest laps are often decided. Turn 1
Heavy braking from over 300 km/h into a tight left-right complex. Late braking moves are common but carry the risk of running wide into turn 2.
Turn 4
Medium-speed left-hander where the car transitions from a slow chicane to the fast back section. Entry speed here is worth tenths to the next two straights.
Turn 8
The signature corner: a long, loaded left-hand sweep at around 170 km/h. Rear stability is critical; a twitchy car loses huge time here over a race distance.
Turns 10–12
The slow chicane and hairpin complex where the fastest laps are won. Commitment on the entry to turn 10 determines the run onto the back straight.
